On the lost traces of an ancient route "Mylogozi - Karakonisi"
Last week we found ourselves in the straits of Acheloos below Mylogozi settlement in order to search for the last leg of the route, which is pending for the hiking reconnection of Myrofyllou Trikala and Kali Komi Karditsa.
Here, as unlikely as it may seem nowadays, during the Byzantine period, caravans passed through following the Amvrakia Road, which connected the Despotate of Arta with Thessaly.
Beautiful landscape, imposing with the roar of the water taking your mind away and the feeling of isolation overwhelming you between the steep mountainsides of Kokkinolakka and Hatzi!
After repeated attempts to locate the lost trail with the help of the locals until today we opened up for confirmation, marking about 80% of the total development starting the attempt from the two villages, Kali Komi and Myrofyllo.
We have reached the moot point west of Karakonisi, as we hope that the route is developed entirely by a path, via the ancient bridge still standing on the Arenda River, and its completion could be crucial in linking Argithea with Hatzi and Tzoumerka further north.
The overgrown steep valley in the Acheloos straits is one of the most difficult places to explore on the Pindus crossing route so we are attempting it in winter with leaf fall, and it remains one of the few sections still pending to be identified for the Pindus Trail from Delphi to Gramos.
