In West Vardousia, with the volunteer group Wheeling2Help
Last week we travelled to Artotina to continue work on the forest path that connects the village to Artotina Meadows.
This is an old route that is being revived and serves as a more direct approach to the pit meadows and then to the gap between the Sufles peaks, where the trail is aimed to connect Artotina to Meteorizia and the shelters of Vardousia.
In this iteration we were not alone!
We had the pleasure of being hosted in the old village school along with 17 other participants from Greece, France, Spain, Albania, Albania, Guadeloupe, Cyprus, Lebanon, Belgium and Slovakia.
It was our 2nd activity, the first one was completed last July on the Mornos trail. Something good is maturing here!
The project included 4 days of bidding for the final shaping of a 2.7km section of part of the forest path, which mediates the connection between the village square and the dirt road that soon leads to the Artotina meadows.
With the labour contribution of the young volunteer group, we are one step closer to the completion of the 18km day hiking section, which aims to connect Artotina with the Sufles Pass, the shelters of Vardousia and Ath. Diakos (Upper Mousounitsa).
Given the progress made on the forest sections of the day route in Artotina and Ath. Diakos, the signposting of the alpine zone section and the shaping of the path on the slope between the Artotina meadows and the Sufles passageway remains to be done.
In the next steps, not only the crossing line at Vardousia, but the entire route from Delphi to Artotina will be opened, as the daytime crossing sections are ready to a sufficient degree of shaping and marking:
1. 1. Delphi - Monastery of Ilias - Amfissa > open section with markings on the newly arriving strands / final marking and in some places only a few modifications remain.
2. Amfissa - Prosilio - Viniani > open section with good passability and final route marking.
3. Viniani - Reka - Ktf Giona > open section with good passability and final waymarking.
4. Ktf Giona - Deep Pit - Sykia > open section with moderate to good gradeability and final waymarking / some modifications remain in places.
5. Sykia - Kato Musounitsa - Ath. Diakos > open section with good passability and final road markings / few modifications remain.
6. Ath. Diakos - Ktf Vardousia - Artotina > section in progress with 65% completion rate / remaining 1000 meters of forestry + the shaping of the path from Artotina meadows to Sufles and the marking in the alpine zone from the height of Prof. Ilias (chapel above Ath. Diakos) up to Artotina Livadia.
Thanks again to the president of Artotina and the remaining residents for the warm hospitality in the village with the wonderful views and fruit-laden trees!
The volunteer project was made possible with the support of.
